Is osteopathy safe?
Yes. Osteopaths are expert healthcare professionals and the safety of the patient is of primary concern. The profession is governed by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), who are there to protect patients, and to set standards for osteopathic education, practice and conduct. All osteopaths are required by law under the Osteopathy Act 1993 to complete a recognised BOst honours degree qualification and then be registered on the GOsC register as being fit to practice.

Will treatment hurt?
Osteopathy is a gentle therapy, using non-invasive techniques to effect change within the musculo-skeletal system. In most cases, no adverse reaction is experienced. However, because it is a physical therapy, it is not unusual to feel some stiffness or soreness in the first 24-48 hours after treatment.
How many treatments do I need?
This will depend on the nature of the presenting case. Acute cases can respond well to 1-2 treatment(s); more chronic cases may take more treatments (3-5+) before any significant improvement is noticed. Follow-up appointments usually involve carrying out the treatment programme as discussed at the initial consultation. Reassessment may also take place as required.

Do I need to inform my GP?
Most patients refer themselves direct to an osteopath. Although referral by a GP is not necessary, it is a good idea to keep your GP informed so that medical records can be kept up to date. With the patient's permission, an osteopath may send a report to the patient's GP with details of the examination and treatment.
