Your first visit

Your first appointment will take approximately 45 minutes.

Case history

A full case history is taken, including your presenting problem and your past medical history. You may also be asked questions about your lifestyle, occupation, family, leisure activities, medication and general health.

Greenfields Osteopathic Practice is compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation, which addresses storing, processing and accessing personal data.  For further information, please see our consent form and privacy notice on our policies and procedures page.

Examination

This is followed by an examination, which usually involves undressing down to underwear (or shorts & t-shirt, if preferred) so that body movements and problems areas can be assessed. Palpation may be used during the examination, and prior consent will be sought. Specific medical tests may be conducted.  If you prefer, you may have a friend or relative present during the appointment.

NB: You will be asked to complete and sign the consent form regarding both examination and your personal data.  Please see our policies and procedures page.

Findings and recommendations

Findings from the examination will be discussed with the patient and a recommendation made as to the best course of treatment. This often includes hands-on therapy, but may also include advice about exercise and stretches, lifestyle changes, etc.

Treatment

If there is sufficient time and it is considered expedient, some treatment may be given at this first appointment, again with consent. Treatment usually takes place with the patient sitting or lying on a treatment couch. Techniques used may include the following:

  • Soft tissue work and massage

  • Muscle energy and release techniques

  • Rhythmic joint articulation

  • Joint manipulation
